Role summary

We are hiring a Hotel Night Manager to lead overnight guest service, operational handovers and cross-department incident response while maintaining safe hotel operations. The employee will coordinate with relevant hotel departments, apply approved safety procedures and deliver consistent service supported by accurate records.

Main responsibilities

  • Review expected arrivals, departures, occupancy, unresolved guest issues and overnight staffing at shift handover.
  • Coordinate front-desk, housekeeping, security and engineering responses to overnight requests and incidents.
  • Handle escalated guest concerns using approved service-recovery limits and accurate written records.
  • Check that overnight room status, arrivals and relevant billing exceptions reach the responsible departments.
  • Support the night audit process by monitoring completion and escalation without bypassing the Night Auditor's financial controls.
  • Follow the hotel's emergency response plan for incidents, safety alarms or medical assistance requests.
  • Review lobby and guest-service readiness, unresolved room moves and relevant VIP or accessibility requests.
  • Keep current incident, maintenance and guest-communication logs with appropriate privacy protections.
  • Coordinate realistic early-morning operational briefings for the day shift and unresolved action owners.
  • Escalate significant safety, financial or reputational matters to authorized leadership without making unsupported decisions.

Skills and qualifications

  • Overnight hotel operations and front-office coordination.
  • Guest service recovery, confidentiality and calm escalation.
  • PMS familiarity, room-status and shift handover accuracy.
  • Emergency-procedure awareness and interdepartmental communication.
  • Team support and supervisory decisions within delegated limits.

Benefits and workplace conditions

A Night Manager coordinates overall overnight service and operational incidents; a Night Auditor focuses primarily on audit and reconciliation, while a Duty Manager may cover daytime or rotating shifts. Define the overnight staffing model, financial approval limits and who receives emergency escalation.

Checklist: Customize this job description

  • Confirm the actual business, team size, equipment and systems used in this position.
  • Document which decisions the employee may make and which require supervisor approval.
  • Specify genuine certifications, licenses and safety training relevant to actual work.
  • Verify working hours, approved compensation, weekly rest and employer benefits.
  • Use a monitored recruitment channel and a fair job-related assessment process.

Hotel Night Manager interview questions

  1. What information must a Night Manager verify when receiving an incomplete evening-shift handover?
  2. How would you respond if a guest reports a safety concern while only a skeleton team is on duty?
  3. What is your role if the Night Auditor reports an unexplained payment discrepancy?
  4. How do you prioritize a late arrival, an occupied-room maintenance fault and a guest complaint?
  5. What belongs in the morning manager's incident handover, and which guest details should remain restricted?

Use the same core questions for applicants to a particular opening. Ask what the candidate would verify, how they would make a safe decision, when to escalate and how they would document the outcome.

Practical hiring assessment

Suggested 45–60-minute assessment: Provide a fictional 11 PM hotel situation report covering late check-ins, a room outage, a guest complaint and one unresolved audit exception. Ask for a 60-minute priority plan, an incident escalation note and a morning handover. Use fictional business data and consistent criteria. Provide appropriate accessibility adjustments and do not require unpaid productive work or hazardous demonstrations.

Two reviewers may independently score the five competencies from 0 to 20 and discuss differences. Set critical pass requirements before assessing candidates; a strong total score does not override a serious safety concern.

Realistic hiring scenario

At 2 AM a room loses power and another guest disputes a charge. A strong candidate protects immediate safety and accommodation needs, delegates tasks realistically, and defers unauthorized financial changes.

Frequently asked employer questions

Can I publish this Hotel Night Manager job description unchanged?

Not until the employer name, location, actual responsibilities, salary, hours and application details are confirmed and the placeholders replaced.

How should the work sample be assessed?

Use consistent tasks, clear evidence criteria, authorized assessors for specialist work and documented judgments rather than impressions alone.

Are salary and qualifications the same in every hotel?

No. Verify the hotel’s real terms and the local legal or operational requirements. Do not invent pay figures or certification requirements.
